BEERVANA – A Beginners Guide

Beervana is the one time of the year that you can visit a single location in New Zealand and try the largest range of New Zealand brewed beers in one place. On offer there will be over 160 different beers from all around the country.

The benefits of this are you get the freshest beer from nearly every brewery in NZ, you get to discover many small breweries you may not have heard of and even less likely to visit them in… Continue

Three Cities x Three Bars = Awesome Craft Beer in California

Anyway, my travels took me to three major Californian cities that have
some really great beer bars. So as a quick guide for others traveling to
these cities. This isn't a definitive guide, as there are many more
great beer places, but these places were at the top of my wish list, and
came with many recommendations from people that know.

One way to royally stuff up a brew.

Yeah - it's been a while since I wrote one of these. I hate typing mostly... that's why. But I had a real serious incident during my brew today. You see - I had mashed in as usual. I mashed for around half an hour before I decided to start recirculating. I had already started collecting and heating my sparge water...

Then the power went off.

So instead of panicking, I decided to sprint around the house in my underwear saying this like "Un-fucking-believable"...…

Rev's USA trip

Allrighty, I just realised that I still havn't blogged about my recent trip to the US of A, so what better time than now :o) Sorry I dont have any pics but no internet at home so cant upload them...

I guess I should start by saying that all of the storys are very much true, yes there is an awful lot of craft beer in the US, and it is readily available, so available in fact that every local 7/11 or convenience store I went to at least had SNPA 6 packs for $8!!…

Yeast wranglers unite

Anyone out there got some yeast to swap?
I'm looking to build up a decent collection, I have a few strains I'm happy to share which I can give as slants or frozen vials. I have lager yeasts Saflager s23, saflager w-34/70, dry ale yeasts U-04 and US-05, and muntons premium gold. I'd be interested in some Belgian abbey/ golden ale style strains, or anything else interesting.

Luke's 2010 USA Trip - Part 1 - San Francisco

I needed a place to record my recent trip to the USA to answer all those questions people have asked me about it.

The main reason for my trip was to judge at the 2010 World Beer Cup, then attend the Craft Brewers Conference. I thought I would take the time before the event to check out the beer scene in the US since it had been two years since I had been there.

So this first part is my few days in San Francisco.

Living in New Zealand and flying to… Continue

Barrels with Epic Beer in them

I thought I would do a quick post here to answer some questions about what I am doing with the barrels in the brewery. So some stats

I purchased 12 x American Oak, Medium Toast barrels (225 litres each)

They were first filled on 19th February 2010 with some Epic Armageddon IPA

Today 19th April 2010 they were emptied back into a unitank and will be chilled down before filtering and bottling next week.

So IPA was on the wood for 2… Continue

Beer engine reconditioning, part 1

If you follow

this thead you'll know that I recently purchased 2 beer engines off trademe.

Seeing as my brewing inclination is towards British styles - real ale, I've been after a beer engine for ages. Usually they get snapped up quick smart by Greig (who hasn't shared with me the highly secret search/RSS query that tweets him the instant anything remotely… Continue

A Homebrewers Christmas

It starts out small, a wish for beer,

A kit and kilo, a drink is near!

In the mix the kit and sugar go,

The outcome a fate we all know.

The beer tastes soapy and a little shit,

The boys cry out says it's not a hit.

So what's next on this epic undertaking,

To get beer that is not painstaking.

We invest in the gear to start from scratch,

Mash tun and grain mill are part of the catch.

A little more bling we buy it all new,

The… Continue

Around the World in 14 days to the Kapiti Food Fair

I've just returned from a whirlwind around the world trip in 14 days: taking in 2 days in San Francisco, a stopover in Frankfurt, 6 days in Ireland, another stopover in Frankfurt, 3 days in Tokyo.

The question that springs to mind immediately, is how many regional beers you can fit in in a fortnight of perpetual jetlag. Seeing as it was my first vist to the US, I was obliged to sample a Budweiser at point of origin. While it quenched my thirst, my impression that it does not travel… Continue

Beer, food and culture...

Beer, food and culture...

just came back from a great trip to Wellington. I decided to do a 'road trip', with my dad.

Now I have always had a good time in Wellington. I have been there many times, dating back to the 1980's. It has almost always involved impromptu meetings or happenings that turned out to be blinders. Dating back to one of first visits in the late 80's, I stumbled along to the (then) Cricketer's Arms and saw 'Paul Kelly and the coloured girls', play live. I… Continue

Rough Wise Guy Ale

Most of my inspiration comes from sitting on the crapper, reading through a stash of BYO magazines. The latest issue has an article about Cloning beers, giving an example of Rogue Dead Guy Ale. This is nothing like it. The original called for 4kg Pale, 1.8kg Munich and 500g Carastan malt. Decided to break down the Munich and Carastan into Munich II, Vienna, Crystal and Melanoidin and a bit of Roast. 20 mins into the mash and god knows how it will turn out.

Rough Wise Guy Ale… Continue

Up the Ginga Irish Red Ale

Already thinking about how I'm going to re-use my 1084 yeast cake from the stout I brewed last, after a little washing. The fermentation did in the end take off, slow and steady all the way. A little worried by floaties on the surface, but seems like the yeast hasn't yet dropped and a taste out of the carboy yields a pretty terrific brew- a couple of days in the fridge will cure that.

I'm a… Continue
