Most of my inspiration comes from sitting on the crapper, reading through a stash of BYO magazines. The latest issue has an article about Cloning beers, giving an example of Rogue Dead Guy Ale. This is nothing like it. The original called for 4kg Pale, 1.8kg Munich and 500g Carastan malt. Decided to break down the Munich and Carastan into Munich II, Vienna, Crystal and Melanoidin and a bit of Roast. 20 mins into the mash and god knows how it will turn out.

They go on about CaraStan quite a bit over there - and no one over here knows what it is! It's equivalent to the 60 - 80EBC Caramalt from Bairds... (if you can find some).

Caramalt / Carastan / Crystal / Caramel Malts are all in the same product range from Bairds. Carastan however, supposed carries a greater toffee flavour.. great for ales! :)

See IMO ive allways found CaraPils to give off a massive toffee flavour, despite being told that its 'nuetral', I feel it is far from it!

toffee or caramel? toffee to me is tending burnt, dark caramel.

carapils = neutral for me, depends what's put with it that you might be tasting I guess ?
