Does anyone have an APA partial mash receipe they can recommend?

I'm helping a mate to do his first brew and I've talked him out of doing a kit. As he's an American we're looking at an American Pale Ale, using pale liquid extract plus ?? and with some steeping grains. Hoppy of course with Cascade, and possible another US hop, and SO5 yeast.

What do people recommend to supplement the extract to achieve the right body? Simply more extract? or are those enhancers you see in the HBS any good? It's been soooo long since I've done an extract brew....

This is for 23 Litres BTW

Crystal malt and maybe some carapils. If you want more malt flavour you could maybe add some caramunich. These will give you more body and flavour. On top of my head I'd say maybe up to 500 g total for 23 litres, and two cans of 1.5 kg extract.

I find Wilamette to be a good bittering hop for APA's, cascade is a must for flavour and aroma in my book.
Thanks Soren. Yes I have some Caramunich III and also some CaraAroma, so think a total of 4 or 500g for steeping sounds good.

I'll also go for two 1.5kg cans of extract.
My latest APA i used cascade and Amarillo for flavour and aroma....not sure whether to recommend the hoping schedule till i taste it....i'll let you know
Amarillo is certainly also a good one.

I love caraaroma and it will certainly make a nice beer, but wether it will be an APA or not is a different question. But hey, you're the brewer and if you say its an APA, it IS an APA!:) I'm thinking maybe 100 g would be a good amount.
Tasted the dreggs bottle a day after bottling and it tastes bloody lovely!

this is my hop schedule for 19L

40g Green bullet 60mins
30g Amarillo 20 mins
30g Amarillo 10 mins
30g Amarillo 5 mins
100g Cascade Dry hop
10g Amarillo Dry hop
Probably don't need to partial mash for this beer if you don't want too, extract and steep should be fine, easier for beginners too.

You say it's been long since you have done an extract brew? Got an AG recipe that you could convert? Just swap out the base for the right amount of extract to achieve the right OG. I'd use BlackRock for the extract, seems to finish up medium body for me.

Don't use the enhancers, they're like 90% dextrose.

I'd go cascade and amarillo or cascade and chinook. Even Riwaka is quite nice if you can find any.
I would just go for two cans of pale extract and focus on hops. Maybe steep some crystal?

Having said that, I did a partial mash on an english pale ale about a year ago that went like this:

Partial mash using brewcraft grain:
2kg pale 2-row
333g crystal

Extract:
1.8kg muntons LME
167g Wheat DME

OG: 1.050

Beer was good and inspired me to immediatley start all-grain.
I'd stick to the cirussy hops like cascade and amarillo, riwaka definately reeks of tangerine - dont know where you'd find chinook in NZ though. Those 3 hops are all you'd need in an APA. Keep the malt simple - stick to 1 crystal: that way you know you will have a good outcome. For 23L 500g of crystal is on the full body side of the spectrum, but it would still work. As far as the hops schedule goes... if you used that much crystal it would be a shame not to use heaps of hops too! 40IBU sounds good from where I'm sitting - and up to 100g at the end of the boil (split it up with the flavour/aroma additions) would give you heaps of hoppy beer that you plrobably wouldn't need to dry hop (but still could if you felt so inclined)... Just use as much of those 3 hops in the flavour/aroma additions together (no need to boil Amarillo seperately from Cascade and Riwaka).

eg: 15mins 17g Riwaka
15mins 17g Cascade
15mins 17g Amarillo
0mins 50g Riwaka, Cascade, Amarillo...
Brewer's Coop had some Chinook (or maybe centinnial, too lazy to open beersmith right now), used it in an IPA, very nice, dunno if he's still got any though.
You could do a partial decoction and add it to the extract, Brett. I usually add a little crystal to sweeten it up, but throw in your Munich, if you want. If he is brave, hop the fuck out of it. It'll at least put a smile on his dial at the end of a hard day. I wouldn't go with any more than about 200g of the sweeter malts. Those brew kits tend to have those in them as well and the last thing you want is sweet/sickening beer. I found the Cascade pale ale a good brew kit. I used that with a can of muntons extract, with 100g of concocted crystal. Hoped with 50g of willamette @ 10 minutes from end and 50g cascade @ FO. Turned out really well.
Thanks for all your replies.

Have bought the ingredients this morning - No Cascade or Amarillo unfortunately so went for Nelson Sauvin and NZ Williamette - so will be a New World Pale Ale instead.

Yes, it will be an extract and steeped (3kg of blackrock light malt and 250gm of crystal) rather than a partial mash. Not yet sure of the hopping schedule but NS can be too much on it's own IMO. The williamette should round it out a bit. Agree IBUs of high 30s or 40 for this one.

I didn't realise that the enhancer had that much dextrose, thanks for the steer.
That's not an actual number from anywhere, just a guess. But just by looking at them (and that dextrose is listed on the ingredients before malt extract, so at the most it would be 50-50) it wouldn't surprise me if they're 80 - 90% dextrose, and 19 - 9% DME, and 1% hop dust of NZHops store-room floor.
