Hey, so my flatmates went out to Gladfield Malt in Dunsandel on the weekend; ended up being a really good trip for them, and now we have a steady cheap supply of NZ Pale Malt, so we're passing the savings on to YOOOUUUUUUUU!!!!

But anyway. He said he'd be happy if we supplied the local christchurch homebrewer market with his malts—i.e, we can be the ChCh distributor of sorts—so at the moment we'd be looking at around $2 a kg of pale malt, which saves having to drive 45mins out there. Theres that way, but more interestingly, we could always just chip in together and go out there with a trailer and pick several bags up. Have a good yarn with him, and then we have a corny-mill back here which I'm sure you all could use... but whatever.

Also he does pilsner malt, but I don't know what the cost of that is. I'll find out some-time :)

Some other things learnt from the trip: next year he's expanding production to produce specialty malts!

I'd be interested in the cost of the pilsner base malt of course.

The trailer idea sounds like a plan, as I would be looking at a sack at a time and investing in my own marga or crank and stein.

Boys, is it wrong that I've spent the past 2 days reading about how to make your own specialty malt from pale malt?

Was at a bit of a loose end over the past couple of days (the joys of being an expat) so I took a tiki to Dunsandel for a nosy. I'm super stoked that we can get base malt so close to christchurch.
I also had a read of how to make specialities a wee while ago.... maybe it's worth looking into further?
So how big is a bag? Stupid question I know but when kiwis start talking trailers I'm thinking BIG bags...My mitsy diamante has a pretty big boot and could get 4 blokes inside fairly easily..Might run a bit low on the ground though :)

James, looking at some of the recipes, it wouldn't be that big of a price to try and roast some grains. Two or three hundred grams of malt from a 25kg bag isn't too bad eh.

The guidance from Randy Mosher is that it should be done a few days in advance of brewing to let some of the harsher flavours to dissipate
Now, how to get hold of some in Auckland?
They are 30kg bags, the lager malt should be roughly the same price.

Pretty easy guide for roasting base malts as follows:

Ordinary Malts - pale malt as base

Dortmund 95c one hour
Vienna 100c one hour
Light Munich 105c one to two hours
Dark Munich 110c one to two hours
Amber malt 140c one hour
Biscuit malt 150 to 170c up to an hour (depends on type of flavour desired)
Brown malt 180c up to half an hour
Chocolate 200c up to an hour

I can see some massive experiments happening!! :)

So turn your $2 a kg base into $5 a kilo speciality!

That's wicked, all I need to purchase now is a grain mill.... or employ some student.... :)
