Now that I finally have a kegerator, I bought a used one that was actually built from the factory for doing the job. The problem is that once I move back to NZ, it will not run on NZ mains electricity as it is a US unit.

I reckon I can get away with just using a hefty step down transformer, assuming it does not have a problem with 50hz vs 60hz. However, if I blow out the compressor, how could I find a new one in NZ? Would I be better off just leaving this thing in the US and buying an old fridge, or should I bring this with me?

There's a 500VA transformer on trade-me at $80 to give you an idea. 50Hz won't do any damage. Given the price of fridges in NZ, I would guess it will be worth the shipping cost to bring it with you, especially if you are already intending to ship a quantity of other stuff too. Make sure it is shipped upright, and don't forget to leave any fridge for several hours between moving it and starting it.
