Smiffy replied to Hutzpah's discussion Beer temperature
"When the beer is fermenting it will be generating heat so will be warmer than its surroundings, so put  the temperature sensor on the barrel and ideally some insulation (I use bubble-wrap) over it so that the sensor is measuring the beer…"

Smiffy replied to Matt Symonds's discussion IPA with lager yeast. Is it still an IPA?
"My opinion is that because the A in IPA stands for ale, it must be brewed with an ale yeast, however the NZ government are quite happy for Tui to be labelled an IPA despite being a lager. They say that they are allowed to lie about what it is…"

Smiffy replied to Cain Harland's discussion regulator creep
"The gas pressure of the bottle changes at around 1 bar per degree centigrade, so from a bottle at 20C, to the same bottle in the fridge at 10C, the pressure has changed by 150psi. That makes it impossible for a simple diaphragm regulator to keep the…"

Smiffy replied to Cain Harland's discussion regulator creep
"I believe it is due to the bottle pressure dropping as it cools down in the fridge, it should stabilize now that the bottle has cooled down to fridge temperature. Smiffy"

Smiffy replied to Cain Harland's discussion control pannel help
"See if you can find a data sheet for the exact SSR you have, and look for a figure which tells you what the resistance should be across the AC terminals when it is powered off, then you can measure your SSR. You don't say what the indicator…"

Smiffy replied to nofizznofoam's discussion deposits on inside on stainless fermentor
"Sodium percarbonate is a steriliser not a cleaner. Use caustic soda, swill it around every 5 minutes until it's clean. Use the maximum strength as shown on the container (for cleaning drains). Keep it off everything not s/s though, especially…"

Smiffy replied to Rhyno's discussion Water Profiles
"First, let me say I think it is well worth the effort. The first time I tried an identical recipe IPA without then with water correction, the result was conclusive. With water correction, the IPA was hoppier an maltier. Since then, I have always one…"

Smiffy replied to karl oemcke's discussion FERMENTER MODIFICATIONS

Smiffy replied to Josiah Seatter's discussion Keg Conditioning & Carbonation
"Using excess pressure and trying to control the carbonation by timing is totally unpredictable and unreliable. Decide what "volume" of carbonation you want (I go for 1.7 for an IPA), look at the actual temperature (e.g. 20C), read off the…"
