Has anyone had experience with Gladfield's Toffee Malt? I'm planning on using some in a Pale Ale recipe in place of caramalt. Would be good to know what to expect.

The spec on the website says 10 to 20 EBC so it's at the light end of the usual UK caramalt range.

Where are you guys getting this from? Direct from Gladfield? I'd love to use more of their malt, especially now that they have a full lineup of specialty malts, but for some reason homebrew shops don't do Gladfield, and it really only works out cheap enough to buy direct if your getting a number of full sacks. (For those of us that don't live in christchurch and need to ship it that is)

yep. Paul has been out to Gladfields recently. Real friendly guys and doing a lovely range of malt that is super fresh (and super tasty). If your LBS (local brew shop) is not stocking it maybe you could ask them to? They may not even realise that Gladfields have expanded their range.

Steve gave a few of us a munch on some of the Gladfields Pale Crystal when I was at Hallertau last week. Its really quite sweet and intense compared with the Thomas Fawcett we were using in my Pale Ale. I'd love to get a hold of some as it was quite delicious and seemed like a little would go a long way

I have been using some of their medium crystal, which is yummy just to munch on and is going down well in the beers I have been brewing too. I think Gladfields have plans to provide 5kg bags of specialty malts for home brewers? If you give them a ring they may be able to do something for you?

They are also planning on 1kg bags for brewers.

I love a good problem!

Now to find the solution!

Like Ralph said - good friendly people and a nice range of fresh malts. I got 1 kg of the Toffee simply because it sounded interesting. The inside of the grain is almost like crystallised and is chewy which I think is where they get the name from. I'm going to use some in a Pale Ale on Tues.

Awesome thanks guys. I'll get in touch with them and see what they can do.

I'm putting some in to the SJPORR challenge, brewing the batch tomorrow, should be interesting to say the least.
