Hi,

I'm a homebrewer in Christchurch looking at getting started with grain brewing.  I'm looking at buying a sack of base malt.  I called Cryer's and they suggested I deal with Dunedin Malthouse to order malt.  Before I go ahead and do this can any other Christchurch brewers offer any advice on suppliers?  Is Dunedin Malthouse the way to go or are there other suppliers I should also consider.

I'd also be interested in advice on the best base malt to start with.  I intend to brew ales and would like to brew some Belgian styles at some point too.  Any suggestions for a good base malt for beers along these lines would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Andrew

Yep Dunedin Malt House is a good option for Chch people as their freight to chch is pretty cheap. And the service is good and speedy. I think they only have the main base malts (Pilsner or pale) listed at sack prices on their web site but I know that if you ask them they can do deals on sacks of specialty malt too, for the likes of your Belgian and stuff. You could probably just use Maris Otter for your main base malt unless you want to get fancy and use something like munich or vienna, however Maris Otter will be much more versatile than those.
Hi Bart,

Thanks for that. Versatile is what I'm after at this stage, and from what I've been reading Maris Otter is the way to go.

According to the guy at Cryer's I can order from Dunedin Malthouse but just pick the sack up directly from Cryer here in Christchurch, so hopefully there won't be any freight charge.

Thanks
Andrew
Hey Andrew

You can order from any of the other online retailers such as Liberty or brewers Coop, given some of the prices of malt from DMH recently, the freight makes no real difference.

Sean from The Twisted Hop and Paul or Coops from Wigram Brewery are also known to help out the HBer occasionally.

If you can get hold of Doug from Gladfield's you could get sacks from him of Ale or Pils malt.

Good luck!
