Hey there,

Does anybody know where to pick up some 1/2" reinforced, heat tolerant hose. I keep having trouple transfering hot wort through my pump with that crap from the hardware store. It just folds under the heat and vacum.

I know you can order stuff like that from Auz, i think its a silicon type tubing, but surely there is somewhere in NZ who stocks it?

Cheers
Alex

Blackwood Paykels has a great range - I got mine from there.
I was at HCD yesterday, they have 1/2" silicone, over $30/m. You can bring it in from the states, morebeer.com, for heaps cheaper, even with the conversion rate, I think about $20/m incl shipping. There's a crowd in the SI that will make it to order, but won't sell less than a 20 or 25m roll, and works out about $28/m.

I bought some from Aus when the dollar was real good at about $15/m. It's not reinforced but I've used it for a couple of brews and no dramas with collapsing yet, it has a nice thick wall.

Blackwood's have a good selection and the stuff is probably cheaper than silicone but I like how the silicone is translucent, makes it a bit easier to work with IMO.
My stuff is the clear reinforced stuff - easy enough to see through (not as clear as silicone though) it's food grade, heat tollerant to 130 degrees, and it cost $1.50 per meter. I got 5 meters and have some spare. I'm really happy with it.
OK, that just makes me emo that I spent so much money on silicone.

How clear? Silicone isn't clear though, any less clear and it'd be opaque, it's like that shitty old piece of PVC racking tube you find under all your brew gear that's about a decade old. Might look at the stuff when my silicone needs replacing just dunno what to look for, everything foodgrade in the catalog was opaque or PVC.

Do you know what it's called/made of/part number? I didn't see anything decent when I was at Blackwoods and the guy there was kinda useless.
It's in my photos of the Brewery. I don;t know what it is called - but it is made out of PVC I think. There are 2 layers and each layer is twice as thick as normal PVC hose from Mitre 10 or wherever. In between the layers is the reinforcement which is more for pressure than vacuum. It doesn't suck in though. Just goes green with IPAs! It comes in a range of sizes too. I got 10mm and heated it up to fit over my 1/2 inch fittings. they do 13mm - but I was too scared to go that fat ID.
'Just goes green with IPAs!'

So does silicone!

Cheers mate, will look into it.
Just for the record, I think its this stuff:
http://www.barfell.com.au/pressure.htm (scroll down to TMP II). I got mine from Blackwood Paykels too.

Man, I'm never going to HCD Flowtech again. The guy was a grumpy old dick who was determined not to sell anything to me.
That sucks, every time I've been HCD the guys have been really helpful.
Another option is to use something like this spiral wire reinforced hose (random picture from google) that you should be able to pickup from a dairy engineer as it is used in quite a few places on milking plants. I haven't used it in a brewery but have experience of it in a dairy environment where it handles 85 deg C and alkali/acid without a problem. Seems there are low and high temp variants.
