Does not say what variety?
It says "Hops" on there.... Hops are good aren't they?
Have you got shares Jo?
Heh... Wish I had shares in NZ Hops at the moment!

Yea, didn't read like a good time to be a hop grower from this article ?

http://www.fragrantgarden.co.nz/herbs_perennials.html is another supplier based in Feilding. I picked up two plants for $14 that I am yet to plant. Ian is pretty helpful when it comes to looking after them as well...

Mapua trading only sells smoothcone..... Ive been through this exercise, I'm sure if they could they would sell any variety, stink. Probably better to get pirated hops off you online beer mates; when I bought the smoothcone I at least had  something to compare my "mysteries" with so I know that they aren't smoothies!

I'm pretty new to the growing business. What's the issue with Smoothcone? They have two varieties at fragrant garden, one of which is Smoothcone.

what's the second variety is it Humulus lupulus Aureus AKA Golden Hop which is an ornamental hop and not much use in brewing, I got a smoothcone but have yet to use it so can't help with that but it's only really a bittering hop from what I have read and heard

One's "Humulus lupulus x - Triploid variety bred for brewing" which is the smoothcone that I bought. The other is "Humulus lupulus - Fast growing vine with rasps". I'm assuming that the second is the golden hop you mentioned...

Th Fragrant Garden sell two varieties: "Smoothcone" and "German", often referred to on this forum as "Mystery German". Smoothcone needs no explanation (but it's tetraploid, not triploid - which doesn't really matter for homegrowing/brewing). Their German plants were grown from seed imported from Germany a few decades ago. Since they're from seed (rather than cuttings) they won't strictly be of any specific variety, but their lineage is probably a German landrace like Hallertau.

As for Aureus, I've never brewed with it but I think it has an okay smell. Lemony, resiny.

How'd you come by this info? Always interested to get a hallertauer type but the fragrant garden website doesn't go into much depth as to where they came from or what they are. The triploid is a direct quote from the website... I wouldn't have a clue what it means anyway though.
