I reciently got a co2 tank that had been used for welding.  I was under the impression that co2 was co2 and used the gas in the tank to carbonate some beer.

When I called the place where I will get the tank filled they said that they had seperate tanks for food and welding co2.

Is the beer I have carbonated ok to drink?  Is there any difference between the co2's?

I will ask in more detail at the cylinder testing place when I go to fill the tank (when I can get there during business hours) but what I'm interested to find out what I can from here in the meantime.

co2 is co2.food grade gas bottles are dedicated food grade but still the same gas.cheers.

As far as I have read it's all the same stuff and comes from the same tank, I have munched through about 30 kegs and haven't used food grade, nor been asked what it was used for and its all fine, who did you get it from sounds like they are trying to upsell you

So should I be using a food grade gas bottle or is an old welding bottle ok?

I use a converted 3.5kg fire extinguisher, cost $120 to convert including fill, so can't see the harm in using welding bottle as long as it's in test

Hi there, I have a similar fire extinguisher to your one, just wondering where you got it converted as I want to do the same. Thanks.

if you go to ctest they are on 52 Haytons Road Sockburn, it's the way to go, I think they are also called imtest or saiglobal they are great people as well, they also do filling which I must say is way better than the other guys in Hornby as they always overfill it so you get plenty of beers out of it

Sweet - then I'm sorted.  Thanks for the replies!

Have a look at this carbonation chart makes carbing beer accurately a breeze, instead of cranking up the reg and testing every day to see if it properly carbed,

follow this and you'll get it perfect everytime
