This is probably a topic that has been discussed before but I'd like to know what people's experiences are in relation to different boil times.

From what I've read, a 90min boil should be employed for beers containing pilsner malt but is this really necessary? I know that in theory this should reduce SMM which will in turn reduce DMS in the finished beer but what is the reality?

Should the fermentation temp be taken into account (e.g. Pils Lager = 90min boil, Pils Ale= 60min boil)?

There are plenty of examples on the "What Are You Brewing" thread of 60min pilsner boils, where they OK?

Does a 90 min boil make a better beer regardless of the malts?

I always boil pils beers for 90min and non-pils beers for 60min and I always wonder if it really matters. As a result, I pretty much always brew non-pils beers to reduce the time of my brew day.

on a related note i've just been listening to a brewstrong episode about melanoidins whilst painting the house,and if your not getting a decent boil off rate, to the tune of at least 10% p.h then your probably getting enough maillard reactions during a 60 minute boil leaving the beer somewhat lacking, i worked out i'm only getting about 6% which i guess means i should increase my boil time,get a bigger element or use melanoidin malt in my brews. my current 2kw element only gets 40 ltrs to a gentle boil.

i'd appreciate feedback if i've misunderstood anything in my above deductions;)
