Dear All,

The SOBA National Howe Brew Competition has been announced and is to be judged at the home of many of the country’s best breweries, Christchurch. Ally McGilvary, Nathan Crabbe & James Pinamonti have gallantly stepped forward to organise the event this year.

Here is a summary of the pertinent dates and information:

  • 1st - 21st October 2011 for receiving entries.
  • Judging to be held 29th - 30th October 2011.
  • Costs: $5 SOBA members, $10 non-members per entry.
  • Location: Christchurch (and we will do everything possible to ensure Mother Nature doesn’t shake the bottles up too much!)

To reduce the postal costs, the competition organisers will accept 1 bottle (minimum 330ml) per entry but this will be at the entrants own risk. Sending two bottles is your insurance policy and neither SOBA nor the organisers accept any liability for loss.

The attached press release contains the same information as this post.

Eek! I sent mine down by normal post, the track and trace said they had arrived last week.
I suspect that there might be some they have missed adding to that list as I dropped my beers around there myself over a week ago and mine are not on the list either...
Yeah I'm hoping it's just a mix up!
Me too! Mine's not on the list either (ID 134) but I have NZ Post confirm it was delivered a week ago... *cross fingers*

After a BLOODY cold couple of hours at the coolstore today I learned a few things about home brewers and being part of organising an NHBC.... (please take this as my sick sense of humour, not a whinge or bleat)

1. Many of us do not know our own name or address as many boxes arrived without return sender information.

2. Some have bubble wrap fetishes.

4. Many have packaging tape fetishes... even a craft knife had issues getting into boxes.

3. Those without the above fetishes have WAY too much faith in the postal / courier services to add packaging around their bottles (Chuck Norris type faith).

4. Some Cantabrians still think a NHBC is a reason to have a crate party... (two full ones!)

5. Don't go to a coolstore in shorts with a shaved head... ever.

6. Submission numbers need to be on the outside of the box (or I need to wear pants and a hat).

7. You can play tetris unloading and loading PALLETS (yes PALLETS) of home brew.

8. You can put beer bottles in some really weird shaped boxes / containers, even ones that look like giant Toberlone!

Hi James. good to see you, Al and Nathan tonight warming up again at Poms! Looks like you have your work cut out for you. I have a pink(ish) slip for the Saturday, will be in touch.

Don't say I didn't warn you! ;)

SOBA thanks you for your hardcore dedication, and to all the fetishists... SLAP! ;)

Great work chaps! Much appreciated. :-)
