I have just read Neil Millers comments on the main page and I'm now keen to ask if other members of the forum think that breweryless Wellington can claim to be New Zealand's Beer Capital along with the multi-talented Tuatara brewery as their very own? I am sure that there would be several people in Reikorangi surprised to know that they are actually considered Wellingtonians in some media circles. It would most certainly come as a shock to me....!

geographical boundaries are all relative...

Yes, we bend them to suit our perception of New Zealand or to make it easier to understand where people are talking about and I think it's a little bit of mischeif, just like this.

Read in some smilie things along the way and you'll be right

Take this address for example, I found it on a website that brewers might visit

...Blackbyre Road, Appleby, Richmond, Nelson

Blackbyre Road is in Appleby, it's near Richmond but is in Tasman District Councils jurisdiction, not Nelson District and the NZ Post postcode finder tells us it is in Richmond, not Nelson

Someone in Appleby could be confused to where they are -  or perhaps they are trying to make it easier for us to find them, somewhere near Nelson - as that is a better known place than Appleby

Much like Neil focusing us on Wellington, which the little known Reikorangi is close to.

Thanks for helping me find two great places on the map Neil & Doug

Enjoy your beers tonight chaps, jt

Nice one jt ;-)

A very good point......... now if there were only one Richmond a provincial reference would not be required.

Reikiorangi is within the Kapiti Coast area, just over the border from Upper Hutt, and well within the Wellington region.

Until I open a brewery in Wellington, I am happy for Tuatara to claim Wellington as their home ;-)

Hi Stu,

Thanks for clearing that up although no mention was made about Tuatara claiming Wellington it was the other way around. I suppose now that you include Masterton and South Wairarapa and an area of some 813,000 square kilometres the beer capitals brewery numbers has swollen to what.....two ?

I'd be very happy for the people of "Greater" Wellington if you were to increase that number to three.

Cheers mate, keep up the good work.

But I thought everything in Wellington was within walking distance ;-)
it is. let's take a walk to tuatara next time you are in town!
Perhaps Luke could film the walk for his TV show :)
Yeah it must be as the Ambulance I took from there to came from Wellington hahaha
So maybe our definition of "Walking distance" is a tad broad.  :o(
I don't think any of us who claim Wellington to be the Craft Beer Capital base the claim on our brewing output, rather its on our beer input  :-)
But in the not-too distant future Wellington will have three functioning, if small, commercial breweries in addition to Tuatara, which is very much a Wellington company even if you want to bicker about how many kilometres it is to the brewery. Plus there are already at least four "brewing companies" that contract out their production and at the rate things are going there will be about twenty more soon. We may specialise in consumption over production, but it won't always be that way.
