Bought a 15m length of 1/4" copper pipe from TradeMe, $71 inc postage:

Filled it with water and stuck it the freezer...

Tip: to fill the pipe, stick one end underwater in the sink and suck the water through. Learnt this after getting quite a lot of water on myself and the floor.

After a couple of days, it's frozen rock solid. Makes it possible to bend the pipe without putting kinks in it (well in theory anyway).

Rolled the pipe round a bucket - helps if you stretch it out straight beforehand.

Bent the ends over so they're outside the kettle. Made a bit of a mess of the first but the second was better.

Another tip: If you do put a kink in it, gentle pressure from some vice grips will do an average job of straightening it out, not the best but better than being kinked flat.

Next job is to get some fittings to connect the hoses up.
