Let's play "Identify Crabbey's Hop Variety"

Righto, I'm pretty keen to work out this variety with your help...

Story goes my friend's brother was into homebrewing and he got a hop plant from his mum to plant at his property in Blenheim. This season he gave me a clone which is now in my back yard. I asked his old lady but she has no idea where she got it from originally, let alone what variety it is.

Anyway, here are some pics:

A bunch of cones

More photos available on request.

Note the cones aren't quite mature.

The winner gets a rhizome...

Unfortunately from what I've read it's not possible to to identify variety from the look of the leaf/flower, especially with all the mongrel varieties around. It may give you a slight hint to it's origins but that's it.

The best way is to brew with them! SMaSH 'em bro.

They aren't smoothcone mate... and they are very loosely formed...
I hope they finish off looking like this...

Could be something special...

I'll take a Rhizome for sure!

Yeah, I would doubt smoothcone, the flower on that is really different.

Have you crushed one and smelt it yet? May help narrow down the possibilities...

The only cone I have sacrificed didn't have much lupulin - didn't really smell of much really. Hopefully with a bit of sunshine this weekend they will develop a bit more.

Yeah would love to SMaSH it. We'll see...

The looseness of the cone could be an indication of it being ready to seed? Are some cones more "tighter" than others?

There would need to be males close by though?

I don't think hops hermaphradite like their close cousins?
