Mid week drinking

I had a day off yesterday, due to working this coming weekend, which pretty much meant Wednesday was my Friday night, so why not make the most of it ;o)

Started by cooking dinner - a Thai curry - and what better to accompany me in the kitchen than a beer! I thought id treat myself and crack my bottle of Aventinus.. It poured with a nice fluffy head like you would expect from a wheat beer and looked like a pale chocolate colour. The taste was a combination of roasted wheat and… Continue

Dinner at Hallertau

Well, ive decided to finally start a blog to stop me clogging up the forums with all my banter :oP In my defence im stuck at a boring desk all day, 5 days a week, and what else is there to do other than read about beer?

Last night me and Nicole went out for dinner, just the two of us, for the first time since Enzo was born - 10 months ago if youre wondering - and of course, we had to go somewhere decent, somewhere that has not only excellent food, but something more than excellent to… Continue

Malt.

Pale Malt and Lager/Pilsner Malt. Does it matter if I boil them at the same temperature? Obviously I'll use lager yeast for the lager and pilsner malt and ale yeast for the pale malt, crystal malt etc.

Cheers.

Aaaarrrrgh! Corona Style Beer again.

I just finished brewing my corona style lager - my first partial grain lager ever! Hope it works out!

However there was one thing I did wrong...

Well, damnit! I left the grains boiling in the slow cooker for nearly an hour. Wasn't thinking straight. Stupid stupid!! I NEVER did this before! Soon I realised though! After ranting to myself hysterically like Christian Bale on the set of Terminator 4 I threw out the wasted grains and did another batch. This one I only did… Continue

Help if possible.

Hello,

I'm going to attempt to make a bland Corona type beer for a friend of mine - still not too sure what sort of ingredients to use. So far I'm going with lager grain, pale malt, light malt extract, rice flakes, and little to no hops of any kind (probably Sticklebract). Am I on the right track here?

Cheers!

Hop Heads read on: Naked________IPA²

I didn't know quite how to start this blog, because I've built this beer up in my head over the last 7 months - as soon as I found out that Christina was pregnant. We took the test, it came back positive, and within minutes after I said "we're having a baby!" were the words "that's it - I'm brewing a Celebration Ale, we're having a party - and we'll crack the keg then!!!!" Well, the time has come. On a miserable Wednesday afternoon I made the managerial decision to leave work early and come… Continue

An Epic amount of media coverage

Going to the UK to do a brew has been a good angle for a story for many of the media. Here is a list of recent Epic Beer coverage. Even though several didn't end up saying much or anything about the UK brewing adventure, such as Campbell Live, it has all been good coverage.

Dubbel Trubbel in Downtown Taranaki

This photo was probably the best part of the brewday: i.e. before I had even started! So I had been planning a Dubbel for quite some time - about a month ago, Mike Neilson was kind enough to send me up some WyEast 3787 from one of his smack packs. Unfortunately, it leaked in transit and I only had about 5mls of smack pack juice to crank this beer. I started the propogation process by pitching the small amount of yeast into 500mls of 1.020 wort on the… Continue

Summer in Paradise

New Zealand surely is paradise. I spent the last 2 weeks in Auckland making the most of my last few months as a non-parent, and generally trying as hard as I could to be irresponsible: considering that I am a role model to no-one... as yet.

So the fortnight kicked off a beauty at the Kumeu Festival. I had a reasonable hangover then, and I wrote a huge blog on it.

The next few days were somewhat… Continue
