Nice haul Matthew! Pete: I "kilned" mine in the oven last season, non-fan bake, maybe 80-100degC with the door ajar. All you need to do is drive the moisture off, not cook them! All: keen to hear of other "kilning" methods to compare.

Awesome thanks guys

Did you calibrate within Beersmith? There's a calculation where you put your hydro reading in, OG and then the current refractometer reading you get. It then calculates the difference and applies it to any further readings you take. What was your OG?

its because of the alcohol this spreadsheet corrects the reading for you morebeer.com/public/beer/refractbeer.xls

In the early days---batch eight as I recall---I had a beer ready for bottling. I brought the fermenter into the bathroom ready to bottle over the bath. Was all set up ready to go before remembering to dash to the laundry for some last minute task. I…

The Zip Mash-o-Matic(TM)

Still a work in progress, but fired it up for the first time yesterday. Handled 8.33kg of malt, sparged like a dream.

Bought a leaky old zip, took the top off, made it watertight, added a drain and tap, manifold, tested and wired up the elements. Voila a mush tun.

Copper tank
29 Litres
2.5kW immersion heaters
1/2" copper pipe manifold

Also a 13 litre zip HLT with adjustable thermostat.

Perry Making

When my mate (and former brew master) told me his parents have a grove of pears that only the sheep eat, I though "what a waste of fermentables". The first problem to overcome was how to get said fermentables from their home in Marlborough to my home in Christchurch. As luck would have it I'd be spending a weekend in Nelson pretty much right when the pears were at the hight of their ripeness. So boxes were collected and a detour was arranged on the way home.

As luck would have it it was a glori… Continue

Let's play "Identify Crabbey's Hop Variety"

Righto, I'm pretty keen to work out this variety with your help...

Story goes my friend's brother was into homebrewing and he got a hop plant from his mum to plant at his property in Blenheim. This season he gave me a clone which is now in my back yard. I asked his old lady but she has no idea where she got it from originally, let alone what variety it is.

Anyway, here are some pics:

My kettle is a converted 50L keg. I have 2 elements - a 3kW and a 2kW, individually switched. I used the two together today to bring the wort up to a boil and it took 20 minutes from sparge temperature up to boil. I then switched the 3kW off and it continued to boil very vigorously. Hope that helps.

Hey man,
Been checking out your Belgian Dubbel recipe.
Question: Where do you guys get your specialty malts from.
I've been looking around but must be looking in the wrong places.
I normally brew with Gladfield malt (kindly supplied by the twisted Hop) and what ever they have at Your Shout Papanui.
Any info appreciated. Cheers
Tony

Hey, that is a truly disturbing profile picture you have!! On another note, I am coordinating the volunteers for BrewNZ. Did you know that if you volunteer for a session, you can get into another for free? I see you are coming along so could be a good deal. Drop me an email at stephaniecoutts@yahoo.com.au if you are interested. I can send you the volunteer form. Steph.

brewday = tomorrow. Today was nice, but was out doing things and wedding planning. Drinking croucher PA right now and planning the Impy. Grains are crushed, extract purchased.

Went to the belgian last night. Expensive.
Zymergy is dead to me - its no longer a CB pub. If i was Emersons I'd be asking them to take down the Emersons/Zymergy print that winds it way round the window

Aye, freezer retrieved. Struggle moving it from trailer into garage but wrestled it there eventually. It fits 3 fermenters! Mint
Saw yr beer recipe - looks tasty. 'Finally some hops', i thought.
Just had an Alesmith X and now off to drink some Epic PA's and a rigger of bookie at a friends. I'm on the Jessie Ryder diet for tomorrows game

Fermenter... you know I personally wouldn't ferment in anything unless I was positive it could be properly sanitised. Plastic at a pinch for economy, or stainless. I don't think copper would be a good idea. Just my opinion :)
