Adding hops to a pilsner

Started this discussion. Last reply by Ryan Perkins Jul 26, 2014. 23 Replies

I brewed my first pilsner a few weeks back and I had a taste when I was transferring to a secondary vessel. Although I added plenty of late hops to the boil (czech saaz) I didn't taste or smell a lot…Continue

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and to brewing as well and I am finding this site very useful at answering my many questions. I am in the middle of my fourth brew which is an all grain amber ale…Continue

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion How long should you ferment a American Pale Ale?
"Nah all good, I'm sure it will turn out great.  Sometimes they sit on top but they will all eventually absorb the beer and submerge.  All good with the sanitised spoon but you'll want to try and limit the exposure to oxygen…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion How long should you ferment a American Pale Ale?
"Yeah that sounds good.  As far as the hop combos go citra and nelson sauvin are both quite distinct on their own so if you mix them with other hops they are likely to stand out which is fine if that is what you are after.  I would…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion How long should you ferment a American Pale Ale?
"It looks like quite a dense krausen which is fine as they are all different but it looks quite woven together and may be why it hasn't been able to drop out. Try giving it a gentle swirl to see if it breaks up and drops out.  If it…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion D-Day Is Here!!! (Drink-Day)
"Good result Dazza the first one can't perfect but it sounds like you did a good job anyway.  My first one tasted like fizzy brown banana water, but I did follow the home brewing kit instructions to a tee and that was the…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion Questions On Stuff I don't Understand???
"Sounds like a good plan.  Either day, what ever suits...it can be quite a time consuming process getting all the bottles cleaned and sanitised etc."

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion Questions On Stuff I don't Understand???
"If you can be patient (I know it's hard on the first brew!) give the dry hops at least another couple of days then cold crash.  This will give the hops a better chance to release their aroma."

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion Questions On Stuff I don't Understand???
"Cold crashing is pretty simple Darren, all you do is put the fermentor in fridge for at least 2 days at 4 degrees.  All the junk settles down to the bottom and your beer will be much clearer.  The only downside is there will be less yeast…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Darren Andrews (Daza)'s discussion Help with my First All-Grain 'Recipe' Instructions!!!!!!
"Hey Darren, I wouldn't worry too much about the trub at this stage and I personally would never bother transferring an ale to a secondary unless making something random like a sour beer.  The potential problems…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Ryan Perkins's discussion CS13 - Blonde Ale in the group NZ Case Swap
"Thanks Greg.  I use carb drops for convenience but with lagered beers there is already a certain amount of carbonation present when bottling, so as they age they end up a bit overcarbed.  It's not usually an issue as I drink them all…"

Greg Tarr replied to Ryan Perkins's discussion CS13 - Blonde Ale in the group NZ Case Swap
"Beautiful light gold, very clear, plenty of white head. A little over-carbed to me. A nice mix of malt flavour for such a light beer. I felt there was a floral hint but it was just subtle then it was gone. Nice."

Ryan Perkins replied to Ryan Perkins's discussion CS13 - Blonde Ale in the group NZ Case Swap
"I was just seeing how similar to a normal lager it would be at the lower end of the range, plus I was not in a hurry for a quick ferment.  Next time I will brew more like an ale and see if there is much difference, and I don't think…"

Ryan Perkins replied to Ryan Perkins's discussion CS13 - Blonde Ale in the group NZ Case Swap
"Thanks Peter.  Most likely picked up a bit of oxygen when transferred to a secondary.  It was fermented at 14 degrees so unlikely to be esters unless the yeast strain is prone to producing them."

Peter Church replied to Ryan Perkins's discussion CS13 - Blonde Ale in the group NZ Case Swap
"Thanks Ryan, Good looking brew, nice clrity, robust white head, good lacing, good carb levels. Suble lemon with pine on the aroma. Picking a faint estery note, or maybe its a hint of oxidation, its subtle and doesnt detract, need to do more of this…"
