Hi Paul
Your best bet to meet brewers in Hamilton would be to come along to House on a Thursday or the Ruakura Club on a Friday - pretty much guarantees you meet several people that brew, or least know a fair bit about brewing, and are more than happy to talk about it. I am in a similar position to you in that I want to go full grain but have been procrastinating while I slowly build my own gear. In case you haven't heard of it, How to Brew by John Palmer is an excellent book and can be found free online at http://howtobrew.com/.
Cheers :)

House is an awesome bar in Hood Street with craft beer (the old Loaded Hog). The Ruakura Club is a members club (so yeah similar to workingmans) with well-priced good beer and is located on the Ruakura campus near Innovation Park.
