Given that a lot of us are learning about brewing terms and products from books, web browsers & American podcasts I thought I'd start a thread to help out with pronunciation of brewing related terms.  Even though you may know exactly what a term means, you may not feel confident talking about it if you don't know how to say it.

 

There's a couple of obvious candidates to get the ball rolling such as wort, trub & lauter.  What is the correct way so pronounce these in NZ?

 

Should wort be pronounced "wert"?

Should trub be pronounced "troob"? 

Should lauter be pronounced "lauter" or "louter"?

Does it even matter?

 

The one I struggle with is Nelson Sauvin.  What is the correct pronunciation of Sauvin?  Saw-vin? So-vin? Something else?

 

Don't be shy, I'm pretty sure if you don't know how to say it that others don't either.

Wort=Wert, Trub=Troob, Lauter=Lawter. I think these pronunciations all come from the north of England, but I could be wrong. Our Continental cousins would probably go for Lowter. As for Sauvin, I've heard it it pronounced Saw-vin and Suvaan. Better ask NZ Hops for that one :-) I think our wine friends would probably go for Suvaan.

I know this isn't really an answer, but the OED says that 'wert' and 'wort' are both acceptable (I believe 'wert' is the american pronunciation).

language is forever evolving. As long as the people you are talking to can understand what you are saying why worry if you pronounce it differently? You never know you might be starting a new trend in pronounciation!

Me... I am going to pronounce them the way they look like they should be said to me.

Wort = Wort

Trub = Trub

Nelson Sauvin = Nelson Saw-vin

lauter = lauter

Sweet, by your reasoning I've been saying wort right all along and no longer have to try and remind myself to pronounce it "right"!

I say Nelson Sauvin as in Sauvign(on Blanc) since isn't that where it got its name from? But then I guess the question is what is the correct pronounciation of Sauvignon Blanc!

I'm with you there mate Trub, with a gutteral uB at the end.  With the amount of accents its crazy to think we are all going to pronounce it the same.  You should hear the variations of Whangerei... 

The main thing is that you know what it is that your talking about rather than if someone think you pronounce it unusually.  Try saying it again after 5-6 pints and I'm sure you'll find its different again :p
